I watch TONS of MMA, I love the sport. And while I love and respect BJJ as a system, my question is, would the turtle be more useful to master at this point than the guard for MMA? Its seems like no matter how good someone's guard as, all I see is guys losing and getting pounded from there. Sakuraba did wonders working from the turtle instead of the guard. Should the turtle become a focal point? I've honestly always felt this way, but people would call me crazy. Melanson on this video says a good turtle can replace the guard (1:04)

Good video. MMA and grappling athletes should continue to improve their wrestling skills. Quarter position is a great option.

Still train guard. If anything, in MMA, you may get knocked on your ass or you may end up against someone who's got better takedowns then you have defense for it.
But, use the guard to get back to your feet or get on top. My perspective is unless they give something to you and you spot an opening, Stand, Sweep and Submit in that order.
But yes the turtle is completely underutilised in terms of defensive and transitional strategy.

I don't think Sakuraba uses the guard once in BOTH these fights. True to be clear for those who may not know. Sakuraba fought Conan Silvera twice in the same night ar UFC Japan. The first fight was ruled a no contest when Sakuraba dropped down for a single leg and ref Big John McCarthy stopped the fight thinking Sakuraba was knocked down. Sakuraba subbed Silvera in the second fight with an armbar. Also according to legend, Sakuraba was outweighted by at least 40+ lbs for this fight. It is believed that Sakuraba lied about his weight in order for the UFC to allow him to fight in this tourney, which was +200 lbs. Sakuraba "weighed in" at 203 lbs, when it was believed he was really between 180-185 lbs.

Hey guys, anyone got the Telles 'turtle guard' DVD? I am really getting into the concept of turtling as a means to getting back to feet, sweeping or catching a sub as opposed to using the guard. Seriously looking at some vids from here.. www.championshipproductions.com/cgi-bin/champ/wrestling-dvds-videos.html...looking at the sub sections on escapes, scrambles, sit outs, standups and rolls. Obviously it would need to be modified to take into account subs + strikes etc.

Telles is essentially using sweeps and escapes from folkstyle wrestling, but slightly modified because he uses Gi grips. Check out DSTRYRSG.com for a recent article on Catch Wrestlers using the 'Turtle' to counter a guy trying to get their hooks in.
