No Holds Barred: Jake Shannon on Catch Wrestling in 2016 On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with Jake Shannon of Scientific Wrestling ( scientificwrestling.com). We spoke with him by phone Wednesday. 2016 promises to be another year of advancement for the reviving sport of catch wrestling, with Scientific Wrestling and other groups already scheduling numerous events, training camps, and seminars. But the sport is still small and lacks strong organizations. We discussed how to deal with this, and how also to prevent the type of corruption that is plaguing much of world sport today. With these types of problems in mind, Jake Shannon said, "I've tried to treat catch wrestling as more of an open-source kind of endeavor by just letting anybody contribute, trying to keep everybody honest, trying to keep everybody upright, upbeat, and focused on the goal of promoting catch wrestling as a sport and participating and putting on events and things of that nature." He continued, "My view is keeping the model kind of open-source, distributed, a loose federation of people all working together with like-minded goals and keeping each other honest, and that kind of stuff." There were many highlights in 2015 for catch wrestling, most notably the match between the two-time East Coast King of Catch Wrestling, Thomas Velasquez, and the West Coast King of Catch, Travis Newaza, for the 2015 North American Heavyweight King of Catch championship. This match was won by Thomas Velasquez two falls to one, getting two pins after being submitted in the first fall. It took place December 12, 2015, at the North American Catch Wrestling Association event at the MMA World Expo in New York, and was the top catch wrestling match in 2015 (with video hopefully coming soon). "If there is anything for me personally that marks catch wrestling in 2015, was everybody kind of just started to focus on moving forward," said Jake Shannon. "I'm hoping we can take that leverage into 2016 and really showcase the sport to everybody." We also discussed the pressing need for catch wrestling to get good sources of funds and revenue; the important role of catch wrestling coaches like Josh Barnett and Wade Schalles, who will be conducting a series of training camps this year; how catch wrestling's rules of winning by pin or submission makes it attractive both to fans and to athletes from all grappling and wrestling styles and disciplines; the importance of the upcoming catch wrestling event in July in Humboldt, Iowa, which is Frank Gotch's hometown; and much, much more. No Holds Barred: Thomas Velasquez and Ray Karakas on King of Catch Wrestling at 2015 MMA World Expo On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with two-time East Coast King of Catch Wrestling Thomas Velasquez, and his coach, Ray Karakas. As the reigning and two-time East Coast King of Catch Wrestling, Thomas Velasquez will be facing the West Coast King of Catch Wrestling, Travis Newaza, for the 2015 North American Heavyweight King of Catch championship. This match will headline a catch wrestling card put on by the North American Catch Wrestling Association at the 2015 MMA World Expo ( mmaworldexpo.com). The catch wrestling takes place Saturday, December 12, at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City. We spoke with Thomas Velasquez and Ray Karakas by phone Sunday. Speaking of his extensive and varied background, Thomas Velasquez said, "I've been training for so long. I've enjoyed catch wrestling. It's a very beautiful sport. Vicious, and it really works every aspect of the grappling game, which is the most important in my eyes. So it's good. I have a little bit of everything." He mentioned that besides catch wrestling, he is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, a judo brown belt, and has trained in sambo. "So I have some stuff." Interestingly, in the past he also had participated in the worked pro wrestling, and his arsenal also includes some submissions, especially crossfaces and armlocks, adapted from that to real competition. Since the worked pro wrestling largely emerged out of real catch wrestling, this should not be surprising. We also discussed with both Thomas Velasquez and Ray Karakas how Thomas is a "hybrid wrestler"; how Travis Newaza's style is "made for us"; their training at the Endgame Combat Sports Academy in Teterboro, New Jersey, with people like grappler Nick Caggia, who was the catch wrestling absolute champion at the 2014 MMA World Expo; why catch wrestling deserves as much respect as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and any other sport; and much more. No Holds Barred: Travis Newaza on King of Catch Wrestling at 2015 MMA World Expo On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with grappler and martial artist Travis Newaza ( www.facebook.com/Travisnewazaoffical). As the reigning West Coach King of Catch Wrestling, he will facing the two-time East Coast King of Catch Wrestling, Thomas Velasquez, for the 2015 North American Heavyweight King of Catch championship. This match will headline a catch wrestling card put on by the North American Catch Wrestling Association at the 2015 MMA World Expo ( mmaworldexpo.com). The catch wrestling takes place on the second day of this two-day Expo, Sunday, December 13. The location is the Jacob Javits Center in New York City. We spoke with Travis Newaza by phone Sunday. "I love being on No Holds Barred," he said. "And we got an awesome opportunity for a lot of the martial arts to see catch wrestling on display and to actually see a national title brought together there. And I can't wait to bring it home for California." While he respects his opponent's ability, he said he expects to win by submission, which is "my whole goal". He promised, "I'm going to be very vicious," and said that the best-of-three-falls match may never make it to a second fall. Besides this match, he is also scheduled to compete at the Good Fight's Tournament of Brotherly Love submission-only jiu-jitsu event in a heavyweight title match against ADCC veteran and two-time ADCC North American Trials champion Tom DeBlass. That takes place March 12, 2016, at Cairn University in Langhorne, Pennsylvania. This no-time-limit, submission-only match will have him facing, said Travis Newaza, his "toughest opponent." We also discussed his free seminar at the MMA World Expo following his catch wrestling match, his training at CSW with Erik Paulson and Josh Barnett, why he finds it necessary to be "a well-rounded grappler," competing and training under different rulesets such as jiu-jitsu and catch wrestling, and much, much more. No Holds Barred: Dan Kanagie on King of Catch Wrestling at 2015 MMA World Expo On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with Dan Kanagie of the North American Catch Wrestling Association (http://nacwa.weebly.com). Their next event is a big one, as the 2015 North American Heavyweight King of Catch title will be decided as well as at least three more matches held at the 2015 MMA World Expo (http://mmaworldexpo.com). The catch wrestling takes place on the second day of this two-day Expo, Sunday, December 13. The location is the Jacob Javits Center in New York City. Headlining the catch wrestling will be the 2015 North American Heavyweight King of Catch championship match between West Coast King of Catch champ Travis Newaza and two-time East Coast King of Catch champ Thomas Velasquez. Also set are three more matches: Joe Shick vs. Anthony Pipola - Middleweight Phil Caracappa vs. Hassan Hope - Lightweight Justin Sumter vs. Steven Yokay - Light Heavyweight We spoke with Dan Kanagie by phone Friday. This is the third consecutive year there will be catch wrestling at the MMA World Expo, but the first time it will be organized by the North American Catch Wrestling Association. "This is going to be our first time at the Expo, which is exciting for us. It's a huge event, with a lot of exposure, a lot of big names going to be there," Dan Kanagie said. "It's exciting for us to be there and have them want us to be there part of it." For catch wrestling, this is very important because there will be "a title match there to show everybody some of the top wrestling that we have." Besides the four matches already set, opponents are being sought for a super heavyweight match with last year's absolute division tournament winner Nick Caggia, and a women's match with catch wrestler and grappler Gillian Davis. We also discussed how these matches will use the Karl Gotch catch wrestling rules, how catch wrestling is still "at the beginning of the journey" in its revival, the backgrounds and experience of the wrestlers who will be competing, plans to video record these matches and post them online, and much more. No Holds Barred: John S. Nash on Catch Wrestling, Corruption, and Combat Sports On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with journalist John S. Nash ( www.twitter.com/heynottheface). Writing primarily for the web site Bloody Elbow, his articles have ranged from the Martial Chronicles series on the history of combat sports, to a lengthy analysis of the available data about the UFC's finances, to how fighters are unfairly treated in MMA and how they are attempting to organize themselves. We spoke with John Nash by Skype Tuesday. Besides writing about the colorful history of catch wrestling in the 19th and 20th centuries, he has been closely following the rebirth of this sport, and made several key observations. "I think catch-as-catch-can can be a much more popular sport than it is now. It's a few people holding events across the country and the world. They're trying to revive it," he said. Even with the popularity of MMA and the many styles of submission grappling, he was cautious about the potential for catch to succeed. "I just don't know if it's television-friendly enough to be that popular, put it on TV and get the revenue necessary to be a major combat sport, a major competitor," he said. Whether or not it can be successfully revived will in large part be determined by the direction taken by those in the sport itself. "Hopefully whoever helps make catch a bigger sport, they do it right, because this is going to be the golden age of any new catch, where the foundation is going to be laid of how is the sport going to be for the next -- well, I guess it's going to decide if the sport becomes bigger or if it survives and what form it survives for the next century, let's say," he noted. "If done right, it's in a great position," he said. Catch wrestling has "mixed martial arts, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and pro wrestling all to piggyback off of. It has an avenue besides just college wrestling, it has an avenue to capture fan bases that are already out there." In addition to discussing a lot more about catch wrestling, we discussed the future of sports like American football and combat sports where head injuries and brain trauma are common, the widespread corruption which continues to exist in sports in general, the reaction to the articles on UFC's finances, the growth of interest among MMA fighters in being part of a fighters' association and/or union, the challenges facing those combat sports journalists who dare to tell the truth, why he uses the handle "not the face", and much, much more. No Holds Barred: Mike Chapman on Frank Gotch World Catch Championships (Photo of Mike Chapman wearing Frank Gotch's favorite derby hat by Brad Wilder.) On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with wrestling historian and author Mike Chapman ( www.mike-chapman.com). Our discussion focused on a new event, the Frank Gotch World Catch Championships. This catch wrestling event will be held Sunday, July 3, 2016, in Gotch's hometown, Humboldt, Iowa. It will be organized by the Catch Wrestling Alliance and co-sponsored by the Gotch Statue Committee and the Frank Gotch Kids Wrestling Club. It will take place at the Humboldt High School, 1500 Wildcat Road, Humboldt, Iowa 50548. We spoke with Mike Chapman by phone Monday. "The exciting thing about it," he said, "it is in the hometown of Frank Gotch, who many people would consider the greatest catch wrestler of all-time, or at least the best-known catch wrestler of all-time. He was heavyweight champion of the world from 1908 to 1915. His matches with the great George Hackenschmidt in Chicago are a part of wrestling folklore and legend. His second match in 1911 drew 31,000 people to Comiskey Park." But Gotch's legacy still lives on a century later. "Gotch in the state of Iowa is responsible, in my opinion," he said, "for the state's long-lasting love affair with the sport." While this event is "still in the development stage," we discussed Gotch's importance for wrestling, the basic rules of catch wrestling where you win by pin or submission, the importance of holding this inaugural event in Gotch's hometown, activities planned around this event, information about Humboldt for those planning to travel there, and much more. There will also be a U.K. light heavyweight title match between catch wrestler and former MMA fighter Ian Jones and British sambo champion Chris Hoban, and a U.K. heavyweight title match between U.K. combat wrestling champion Martin Jenkinson and Chris Crossan, as well as several other matches. The format of these matches, said Chris Crossan, will be "no holds barred." All submissions, including chokes, are legal. The matches are two out of three falls and can only be won by pin or submission, with three seconds required for a pin. Each fall has a 12-minute time limit, and there are no judges, meaning that there can be draws if no one wins any of the three falls, although many matches have been completed in much shorter times. He explained that Legit Pro Wrestling is open to anybody from any group or style, how LPW plans to run consistent events, the need for better organization in catch wrestling, how the worked "wrestling" of groups such as WWE gives real wrestling a bad name, and much more. Amin Nazer was born in Dagestan, Russia, and his family moved to Iran when he was very young. At about the age or 9 or 10 they moved to the U.K., and it was there he started training at around 12 or 13 with Chris Crossan in many styles of grappling and wrestling. Now 20 and in college, he is improving as a wrestler, and we discussed this tournament as well as his future. Flash Carter, also based in the U.K., is only 17 but has already built up a record of 3-0 in catch wrestling. At LPW 2, he will be facing Martin Wilby, the head coach at The Lab in Darlington, who is a pro MMA fighter and the current NAGA U.K. Champion and also U.K. BJJ champion at brown belt. Flash Carter plans to move to the U.S. next year, and to the wrestling hotbed of Oklahoma. Asked what attracted him to catch wrestling, he said, "It's no holds barred." We discussed his match, his future plans, and more. No Holds Barred: Travis Newaza and His Five More Matches On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with grappler and martial artist Travis Newaza ( www.facebook.com/Travisnewazaoffical). He has been in the New York area this week to conduct seminars and train. We spoke with him Sunday at New York Combat Sambo. While he has still been competing in various tournaments and events under many different rules of grappling and wrestling, it appears that he may soon be taking a prolonged break. Asked if he had ever competed under sambo rules, while he said no, he added, "I would love to. And I think I will." But that may have to wait. "I am dealing with a lot of injuries," he said. "I think that moving forward and just seeing how dedicated I could be and how precise I could be with fighting these injuries with anti-inflammation diets and constant mobility workouts, if I can stretch out more matches in other grappling arts, but as of right now, I only am going to do five more grappling matches, and then I will be retiring from the sports grappling." Among those matches he hopes to have soon are a catch wrestling match with Curran Jacobs, who had challenged him to such a match earlier this year. "He's number one. He's my next date before anyone else," he said. Also on that list are rematches with Josh Hinger, whom he competed against at the Gracie Worlds, and Adam Wheeler, whom he faced at a Metamoris event. But his focus after that will be solely on conducting seminars as well as training and learning. "It's a season of leaning I feel like I'm going to be going into," he said. We also discussed why he is putting great effort in helping to grow submission-only no-gi grappling events, how catch wrestling can grow, the need for the catch community to get together to hold more tournaments and have better organization, the growth of combat wrestling, why hybrid no-gi grappling events have great potential, how his seminars emphasize teaching leg attacks, and much more. No Holds Barred: Steve Koepfer on Inaugural Worlds and Future of Combat Wrestling On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with Steve Koepfer, the owner and head coach of New York Combat Sambo ( www.nycombatsambo.com). On August 22, in Varna, Bulgaria, the inaugural world championship was held by the recently formed International Federation of Combat Wrestling (FICW) ( combatwrestling.org). Wrestlers from 12 countries competed in this historic event. Steve Koepfer served as the head coach of the 2015 Men's U.S. Combat Wrestling Team, which did quite well at it. Each of the U.S. team's five wrestlers won medals, including one gold, two silver, and two bronze medals. We spoke with Steve Koepfer by phone Monday. "It was a great tournament," he said. "I think for a first worlds, it was actually really, really pretty incredible. It reminded me a lot of the early days of grappling, back in the mid-'90s. There was a lot of excitement. Everybody there was really excited to be part of something big and new." He continued, "It was a nice venue, but the guys could have been wrestling on dirt and been equally excited, because everybody knew that this was a historic moment." The videos from this event will be posted on YouTube shortly and will be available to watch for free. All of the wrestlers who competed at the combat wrestling worlds had made their country's team by winning a qualifying tournament. The competitors included many champions from freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling, sambo, and other disciplines. We discussed some of the future plans for combat wrestling, including next year's world championship, which will probably be held in Europe. This event, he said, was "a great springboard" for future world, regional, national, and local tournaments. FICW also held a congress there, making some important decisions about the direction combat wrestling will take. The congress decided to develop FICW as an "independent organization," he said, and will not seek sanctioning by any other federation. However, in some countries recognition by an existing federation (such as UWW, the international wrestling federation formerly known as FILA) is required by the government, so some arrangement of getting recognized but not sanctioned may be necessary. In any case, FICW plans to remain fully independent and hopes to "stay away from the politics of international sport." He also said that unlike many other federations, FICW plans to allow its national bodies some "freedom" to run their affairs. We also discussed plans to have more athletes train under combat wrestling rules, a proposed Pan American championship for next year, plans to hold at least four tournaments in the U.S. in 2016 including a World Team Trials, how combat wrestling has a "hybrid look" when compared to other types of wrestling and grappling, how combat wrestling is developing internationally compared to how catch wrestling is, plans for developing certification for coaches and officials, and much, much more. No Holds Barred: Michael Rosales on Catch Wrestling and Physical Culture On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with Michael Rosales, coach of the Texas Catch Wrestling Club ( www.facebook.com/pages/Texas-Catch-Wrestling-Club/764413740235951). We spoke with him by phone Wednesday. Beginning in September, the Houston chapter of the Texas Catch Wrestling Club will be moving to a new location: the Metroflex at 8150 Westpark Drive, Houston, Texas 77063. This is, he said, "Houston's premier strongman, powerlifter, Olympic-type lifting gym." Besides the standard training available there, he explained that athletes can prepare for the types of events that take place in strongman contests. "Something that has always been a part of our club is not just wrestling itself, but also strength and conditioning, or what they used to call in the old school parlance physical culture," he said. We also discussed the state of catch wrestling today, how to spark more interest in it, upcoming tournaments in other styles such as sambo and grappling, and much more. No Holds Barred: Steve Nelson and the Unified Shoot Wrestling Federation (USWF) On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman reposts an interview with Steve Nelson, who fought in and ran the Unified Shoot Wrestling Federation (USWF) in the 1990s in Amarillo, Texas. This organization, which was one of the most successful local promotions of its time, held fights under what were called shootfighting rules, with only open hand strikes allowed, but with all submissions as well as kicks and knees permitted. It was thus a mixture of catch wrestling and MMA. Steve was also a headliner in the company's most famous fight, when he took on Ralph Gracie, who had defeated him in under a minute in 1996 under no holds barred rules in Battlecade/Extreme Fighting 2 in the Mohawk community of Kahnawake near Montreal. The rematch took place August 22, 1998, as the main event of the USWF 11 show in Amarillo. This fight was my selection as the 1998 Fight of the Year in mixed discipline combat sports. A video of this fight can be seen here: ( youtu.be/IfhZX5y2Jn8). This interview was originally recorded in August 2008 to mark the tenth anniversary of his classic USWF fight with Ralph Gracie. While MMA in the U.S. was facing many difficulties in 1998, the USWF, which just ran shows in Amarillo and West Texas, was drawing large crowds of upwards of 4000 fans. Explaining this, Steve Nelson pointed out, "We didn't have a TV show. All we had was, we had posters around the town. I went and did a lot of interviews. So the other fighters did their interviews, too, on the radio, and we were pulling these kind of crowds." They were so successful at the art of local promotion in the late 1990s that, "We were the top-drawing martial arts company in the United States at the time." Much has changed since then, of course, with the USWF soon peaking and closing down a few years later. Many of its top stars then focused on MMA, including the late USWF and UFC champion Evan Tanner, or coaching wrestling like Steve, Paul Jones, and others. Steve had been the head coach of the boy's and girl's wrestling teams at Palo Duro High School in Amarillo for many years, but retired from teaching and coaching in December 2013. He now works full-time as the manager of Sakura Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar in Amarillo. In our original lengthy interview, we spoke with Steve about the USWF and its history; his fights with Ralph Gracie; some of the fighters from the USWF who became notable in MMA; important tips for promoters, especially local promoters who need to avoid quickly losing money (which is today particularly important for those running catch wrestling and grappling shows); the accomplishments of the wrestling teams he coached; and much more. No Holds Barred: Antonio Graceffo on Grappling, BJJ, Catch Wrestling, and MMA in Asia On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with the writer, web show host, MMA fighter, and wrestler, Antonio Graceffo ( speakingadventure.com). Now in the final year of his studies at the Shanghai University of Sport in Shanghai, China, where he will complete his Ph.D. next year, he also is a teacher and a member of the traditional wrestling (Shuai Jiao) team there. Born in Brooklyn, known as the "Brooklyn Monk", and raised in Tennessee, we spoke with him Friday in New York while he was in town. Among the many things on this trip he has done are training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at Matt Serra's gym in Long Island, training in judo in Long Island, and training in submission wrestling with Sambo Steve Koepfer at New York Combat Sambo. He commented that, based on what he has seen, both in the U.S. and in Asia, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighters are much better at newaza or ground fighting than judo athletes. In Asia, he said, most traditional forms of wrestling emphasize throws from the standing position and have little or no ground fighting. "All these wrestling forms are dying," he said. However, "There's been a resurgence in interest even in the traditional forms because of MMA." With more athletes in the lighter weight classes than in the West, many of them have been training in local wrestling clubs to improve their ground skills so they could achieve success in MMA. We also discussed how most of the grappling tournaments in Asia are dominated by people from BJJ, how catch wrestling is not well developed there, how there are some tournaments which are called catch wrestling but do not have pins, his plans to continue teaching and of course training after he gets his Ph.D., the catch wrestling and self-defense training he saw in Singapore at the Kapap Academy, and much more. Also, as a follow-up to our previous show, we received the following addition to the comments made in our interview with Larry Hazzard, Sr., the commissioner of the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board: "For clarification, I am completely in favor of the Muhammad Ali Act, but I do not believe that Al Haymon has violated the act. I also respect other promoters' rights to pursue their redress, but I believe that the boxers are benefitting from the PBC and I think that Al Haymon took a very smart approach to reviving the sport. Also, the ABC leadership never discussed this issue with its commission membership before issuing the letter to the U.S. Attorney General." No Holds Barred: Luis Ciraiz on Catch Wrestling, Grappling, BJJ, and MMA On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with catch wrestler Luis Ciraiz ( ciraiz.com). Based in Guatemala, he has been visiting North America the past few weeks on a catch wrestling and grappling tour. He won a championship in the master's division at the NAGA U.S. Open Championship on July 4 in Winter Park, Florida, USA. Then he traveled to Mike Martelle's Grizzly Gym in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, to hold a seminar on July 11 as well as a small catch wrestling tournament. We spoke with Luis Ciraiz by phone Saturday night after the seminar and tournament. "It was really cool," he said. "I got to meet many people. It was really awesome to have the opportunity to teach in Grizzly Gym. Actually that is the headquarters of our whole organization around the world." For the seminar and tournament, "We had even the Grizzly Gym people from Philadelphia coming over, Professor Allen Chambers and one of his guys," he said. "We just had a lot of fun." We discussed the importance of catch wrestlers entering grappling tournaments like NAGA's and "doing catch wrestling" to show its effectiveness even under rules where there are no pins and some submissions are not allowed. Many of the people in these tournaments have jiu-jitsu backgrounds, he noted, and are not used to the takedowns and leglocks of the catch wrestlers, as well as the physicality many wrestlers have. While he will not be competing in this year's ADCC World Submission Fighting Championships in Sao Paulo, Brazil, August 29-30, he noted that this is the "best level of competition" in grappling in the world, and he would like to qualify for this event in the future. We also discussed how the victories of catch wrestlers like Josh Barnett in martial arts tournaments have helped raise awareness of the value of this sport; how there have been tournaments for the past eight years in Guatemala, including this year's Let's Shoot catch wrestling tournament with over 100 competitors; how catch wrestling is actually bigger than jiu-jitsu in Guatemala; his experiences as an undefeated MMA fighter mainly using his grappling techniques, which some promoters don't like; the need to develop a more standard set of rules for catch wrestling; and much, much more. No Holds Barred: Travis Newaza on Catch Wrestling, Grappling, and BJJ On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with grappler and martial artist Travis Newaza ( www.facebook.com/Travisnewazaoffical). Besides competing in numerous tournaments in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and grappling, he has also been training in catch wrestling and many styles of combat sports with Josh Barnett and Erik Paulson. On January 11, 2015, he was victorious in the absolute and heavyweight divisions of the West Coast King of Catch Wrestling Tournament held in San Diego, California, and won the Outstanding Competitor Award, winning all his matches by submissions. A serious neck injury, however, has recently sidelined him from competition. He is currently on a national seminar tour, in part aimed at raising funds to help pay for an expensive corrective procedure. We spoke with Travis Newaza by phone Sunday. He had just completed a seminar at Sambo Steve Koepfer's New York Combat Sambo, and was himself very impressed. "It was such an honor to, one, be able to be invited to Sambo Steve's academy," he said. "I'm a big fan of what Sambo Steve has done for the sport of sambo." And he added, "And two, man, is he just a wealth to be drawn from, so many different styles of grappling that we're not really used to seeing." He will be continuing his seminar tour across the U.S., with upcoming dates in Florida, Kansas City, Missouri, Los Angeles, and other cities. The seminars, like his own competitions, do not focus on one style or discipline. "I've never really been worried about rulesets," he said. "You should be able to adapt." And that applies to everythng in grappling. "I love to learn from all the different arts. Nothing's ever been off-limits. I'll put on the kimono. I'll take it off. I'll put on the kurtka. I'll take it off. I do judo. I love all those things," he said. "It's all wrestling. It's all grappling." We discussed what got him to start training so seriously in these styles of grappling three years ago, his hopes of bringing grappling training to non-profit youth organizations, his Newaza Apparel company, and much, much more.
