No Holds Barred: Curran Jacobs on Ortiz-Sonnen, Neck Cranks, and Catch Wrestling On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with the captain of the 2011 Michigan State University wrestling team and current catch wrestler, Curran Jacobs ( www.facebook.com/curran.jacobs.5). There has been a lot of discussion about the finish of the January 21 Bellator 170 MMA fight between Tito Ortiz and Chael Sonnen. Sonnen tapped out in the first round to what was said to be a rear naked choke, but a closer look at the actual hold Ortiz had applied says otherwise and shows that it was a neck crank. Infuriatingly, many MMA fans who are ignorant of catch wrestling holds like neck cranks, and whose knowledge is limited to what they know, rightly or wrongly, of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, charged that this showed the match was "fixed" because the winning submission hold was not one which they had seen, a rear naked choke. To discuss all this, we spoke with Curran Jacobs about this by phone Monday. "You hear it constantly right now. 'It was fixed. It was fake. His arm wasn't even sunk. It wasn't even a rear naked choke. He didn't even have a choke,'" he said. "That just proves how Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, how popular it is and how heavy it is in the grappling world. And it really, what it really did was show how, it revealed the lack of knowledge people have on catch wrestling. "I was just working out with my gym, Murcielago MMA, today, and all the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu guys were like, 'Yeah, that was fake. That was fake.' "And I said, 'Well, let me show you exactly why Chael tapped.' "And I applied the same position that Tito Ortiz had, and it took them less than three seconds and they tapped. "It's a very painful, painful neck crank." Curran Jacobs also posted a video demonstrating this hold, which can be seen here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=AmUZexL5HDI. We also discussed the need to educate people about neck cranks and other catch wrestling holds; why "catch wrestling is BJJ's Kryptonite"; the purposeful downplaying and denigration of wrestling and grappling by many MMA promoters; the second annual Frank Gotch World Catch Wrestling Tournament, which is scheduled for the weekend of July 15, 2017, in Humboldt, Iowa; and much more. No Holds Barred: Curran Jacobs on Catch Wrestling 2017 On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with the captain of the 2011 Michigan State University wrestling team and current catch wrestler, Curran Jacobs ( www.facebook.com/curran.jacobs.5). With the successful holding of the first Frank Gotch World Catch Wrestling Tournament last year in Humboldt, Iowa, a second edition is planned this year, as well as many other catch wrestling events and activities in 2017. To discuss all this, we spoke with Curran Jacobs by phone Thursday. "There's a lot on the docket for catch wrestling, with the Catch Wrestling Alliance this year. It's going to start with the NCAAs," he said, referring to the 2017 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. "Of course, I've told you before, my mission is targeting wrestlers, specifically Division I wrestlers. Mike Chapman has invited us to join him and the WIN Memorabilia Show at the NCAAs March 16th through the 18th" at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri. "So we're excited to see him there. We're going to set up our Catch Wresting Alliance booth and educate wrestlers and fans alike. And there's no better place to do it than the NCAA tournament." Another way to help introduce people to catch wrestling is the American Hook Wrestling Long Distance Training Program. A century ago the legendary wrestler and trainer Martin "Farmer" Burns had a mail order wrestling program, and this program uses today's technology to reach those people who do not have access to a place to train in catch wrestling. We discussed the various programs and seminars in catch wrestling, the many wrestlers going into MMA while there is no real professional wrestling, the historical ties between folkstyle and catch wrestling, the need for an international catch wrestling federation, the plan for the Catch Wrestling Alliance to begin holding regional qualifying tournaments in 2018 leading to a national tournament in the U.S., the growth of the Catch Wrestling Alliance, his plans to continue both coaching and competing in catch wrestling, and much more. No Holds Barred: Mike Chapman on a Plan to Grow Catch Wrestling On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with wrestling historian and author Mike Chapman ( www.mike-chapman.com). Based in Iowa, Mike Chapman has been to 45 NCAA Div. I Wrestling Championships, created W.I.N. Magazine and the museum now known as the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum, created the Dan Hodge Trophy awarded each season to college wrestling's best wrestler, and has written 28 books including 16 about wrestling. But he also has what he calls "a passion for the olden days of wrestling", when professional wrestling was a real competitive sport a century ago in the days of Frank Gotch, and used the rules of catch-as-catch-can, or catch wrestling, where victory is attained by pin or submission. We spoke with him by phone Saturday. What we mainly discussed was how today's revived catch wrestling can advance and become a popular spectator sport once again. "I hope some of your listeners will even take some notes, not because this is written in stone, but at least it's a starting point," he said. "I think there's four things that a catch organization needs: "It needs a planning structure. And by that I mean a five-year plan and a ten-year plan. What do you hope to accomplish, where do you want to be in five years, and where do you want to be in ten years? "Second of all, they need financing. No plan, no good will, nothing can survive and grow without some financial backing. "Third, it needs leadership, people who are willing to step up and provide the leadership in legal areas, in structuring, like you've been saying for the last year, sports marketing, things like that. "And here's the last of the 'big four'. I call these the 'big four'. "Unity. "None of these are more important than the other. You need a five- and ten-year plan for the structure. You need a financial prospectus. You need leadership. And then you need unity. "Everybody needs to work together." We discussed these points in depth, including: why catch wrestling must remain independent of the existing corrupt and incompetent international and national wrestling organizations; how catch wrestling organizations can still do what they want while working together; the need for a face-to-face conference or conferences of people and all the groups involved in catch wrestling to turn these plans into reality; and much, much more. No Holds Barred: Jim Genia on How New Law Will Kill Grappling and Wrestling in New York On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with MMA journalist Jim Genia ( twitter.com/jim_genia). While much attention has been given to the recent re-legalization of MMA in New York, the rules and regulations issued Thursday, September 1, by the New York State Athletic Commission to implement this new law contained some disastrous surprises for the various styles of grappling and wrestling. Now, as of September 1, organizations wishing to sanction events in professional and even amateur grappling, wrestling, judo, and other disciplines must apply for licensing from the New York commission. (The staged pro "wrestling" is in a separate category and defined as not a real sport.) New York's General Business Law defines combative sports in ยง 1000, section 3: "'Combative sport' means any unarmed bout, contest, competition, match, or exhibition undertaken to entertain an audience, wherein the participants primarily grapple or wrestle, or deliver blows of any kind to, or use force in any way to manipulate, the body of another participant, and wherein the outcome and score depend entirely on such activities." In the athletic commission's regulations for implementing and governing combative sports in New York State, under the heading "Application for License", it states: "Section 214.4. (a) An entity may make an application for a license to supervise and oversee the conduct of matches and exhibitions of one or more of the following authorized combative sports: wrestling, kickboxing (including muay thai), amateur mixed martial arts, and the single discipline martial arts of Judo, Tae Kwon Do, Karate and Kempo." Yet the "NYSAC Application for Combative Sport Authorized Sanctioning Entity License" has a different list. Applications to sanction one or more professional combative sport (except boxing and MMA, which are handled separately) can be made in, according to this wording: "Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Wrestling/Grappling, Judo, Tae Kwon Do, Karate, Kempo." Applications to sanction one or more amateur combative sport can be made in, according to this wording: "Mixed Martial Arts, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Wrestling/Grappling, Judo, Tae Kwon Do, Karate, Kempo." No definition is given as to what is included and what is not in "Wrestling/Grappling", and it is doubtful anyone on this commission even knows what this means. The non-refundable application fee, which does not guarantee getting licensed, is $1,000. In addition, the sanctioning bodies are required on this form to file with the New York Department of State bonds of $20,000 and $10,000: "An authorized Sanctioning Entity must execute and file with the Department of State: Bond in the sum of $20,000.00 conditioned for and guaranteeing the payment of purses and the legitimate expenses of printed tickets and all advertising materials and; Bond in the sum of $10,000.00 conditioned for and guaranteeing the faithful performance of the authorized sanctioning entity of the provisions of Article 41 of the General Business Law and the rules and regulations of the Commission". That application form can be seen here: www.dos.ny.gov/forms/athletic/en/Sanctioning%20Entity.pdf. The "regulations implementing and governing combative sports in New York State" can be seen here: www.dos.ny.gov/athletic/pdfs/9-1-16%20rule%20text%20%20final.pdf. These organizations running amateur events must also provide accident insurance for each athlete of a minimum of $1,000, death benefit coverage of $10,000, and file a mountain of paperwork, as well as having to follow more regulations, some of which are unclear in this poorly-written set of commission rules. Obviously, these onerous fees alone will make it impossible and not affordable for such amateur grappling and wrestling events to take place in New York State. To discuss this, we spoke with Jim Genia Saturday. "A number of factors have put us in a position where we are right now," he said. "One of them was that, one of the major talking points in getting mixed martial arts legalized in New York was that there were all these unsanctioned, unregulated events going on in New York. "Now, you and I, we're savvy about combat sports. We know the difference between an MMA show and a grappling event. But, the people up in Albany, they can't tell the difference. "So unfortunately, to help curb all these unregulated events, the grappling events were lumped together in the new statute, in the law, and in the athletic commission guidelines, with these unsanctioned MMA shows. "And now we're stuck." We also discussed the effect on all this by the ongoing multi-million dollar lawsuit against this commission and others by brain-damaged boxer Magomed Abdusalamov. This suit involved the disgraceful lack of treatment he received after his November 2, 2013, fight at the Theater in Madison Square Garden. After a brutal fight and after he complained of head pain, the commission advised him to take a taxi to Roosevelt Hospital rather than transporting him immediately by an on-site ambulance. This resulted in wasting precious time until he received emergency brain surgery. He was then in a coma for several weeks, still needs 24-hour care, and is unable to stand or speak. This situation prompted an investigation by the New York State inspector general's office, but the report wasn't released until July 2016, a month after Abdusalamov's attorney sued to have it released. The delay in the release of this report could lead to a federal investigation of an attempted coverup, since the New York investigation began almost three years before the report was finally released. And we discussed more about these regulations in depth; how we must demand that the two vacancies currently on the New York State Athletic Commission be filled by people who understand MMA, grappling, wrestling, and other martial arts; what action we must take; the new one million dollar insurance requirement for boxing and MMA promoters to get for each fighter on a card to cover the costs of serious head and brain injuries; and much, much more. No Holds Barred: Dan Kanagie on 2016 Liberty Bell Challenge On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with Dan Kanagie of the North American Catch Wrestling Association ( nacwa.weebly.com). Continuing their tradition of annual events, their next one will be the 2016 Liberty Bell Challenge and Pennsylvania/New Jersey State King of Catch Tournament. It will take place Saturday, August 27, at New World Mixed Martial Arts/NFF Boxing at 8801 Torresdale Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19136. We spoke with Dan Kanagie by phone Monday. "This will be our fourth year holding this event here in the Philadelphia area, actually our first year in the city of Philadelphia. So we have a new location," he said. While the location is new, the basics of this event are the same as before. There will be catch wrestling in six men's weight classes, a men's open weight division, and a women's division using the Madison System of pairing up the competitors. The open weight division winner will qualify for the national King of Catch championship. Matches can only be won by pin or submission, with all submissions allowed, except moves considered unsportsmanlike such as eye-gouging, attacking the groin, etc. No striking is permitted. The matches have a win-lose-draw format, with each match consisting of the best of three falls with each fall having a 12-minute time limit. There can be an overtime if there is no winner after three complete periods, but after that the match will be declared a draw, with no one advancing in the tournaments in the case of a draw. This event will be followed by an East Coast championship in November and the national championship in December, with details yet to be finalized. The national championship will likely feature two past King of Catch champions, Luis Ojeda and Thomas Velasquez. We also discussed the importance of conditioning, how grapplers and wrestlers of all styles and rulesets are welcome at these events, how this revived catch wrestling is still in its infancy, the need to provide care for the athletes, how catch wrestling must use the latest technology and means of communication, why "there's a reason wrestling has lasted longer than anything," and much more. "Have Double Wristlock, Will Travel" No Holds Barred: Josh Barnett on Catch Wrestling and the Need to Compete On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with catch wrestler Josh Barnett ( twitter.com/JoshLBarnett). We spoke with him by phone Tuesday. Several athletes he has helped train will be competing this Sunday, July 3, at the Frank Gotch World Catch Wrestling Tournament in Humboldt, Iowa, run by the Catch Wrestling Alliance. Among them are Travis Newaza, Shayna Baszler, Laura Anderson, and Javier Garcia. "I saw some opportunity to send some athletes out there," he said, "and the biggest thing for me that I have preached as a catch wrestler and a combat athlete is: compete. You have to go out there and compete. And our guys go out and compete in jiu-jitsu-based competitions, catch-based competitions, it doesn't matter. Most of them parlay it into MMA fighting careers. And part of our success is that we compete. We get on the mat, and we're adaptable, we're flexible. And have double wristlock, will travel, essentially." We discussed the format for this tournament, the upcoming Metamoris card in July and the many problems that organization has had, his UFC fight in September against Andrei Arlovski, and his starring a new movie called "Never Back Down: No Surrender". While doing all of this, he is conducting a series of catch wrestling seminars and training camps with Wade Schalles and Jake Shannon called "pin & submit", including going to Denver in August, London in September, and Fort Lauderdale in October. We also discussed how the 2016 U.S. Grappling World Team Trials, run by USA Wrestling in May in North Carolina, were marked by what he described as "incompetence" and being run by people who had "no idea what they're doing." In that event, he finished second in the 100+ kg/unlimited no-gi grappling division, even though officials admitted that he should not have lost. In addition, we discussed what it would take for him to compete in a catch wrestling competition, how "there is really no money in catch" today, how he is following the legacy of the legendary 20th century catch wrestler Ad Santel, the need for everyone involved in catch wrestling to work together, his role in the California Catch Wrestling Association, his training with Satoshi Ishii, how college wrestlers are well-prepared to transition into catch wrestling, and much, much more. No Holds Barred: Curran Jacobs on Frank Gotch Catch Wrestling Tournament On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with the captain of the 2011 Michigan State University wrestling team and current catch wrestler, Curran Jacobs ( www.facebook.com/curran.jacobs.5). He will next be competing in what is shaping up to be an historic event in the 21st century revival of catch wrestling: The Frank Gotch World Catch Wrestling Tournament ( www.catchwrestlingalliance.com/frank-gotch-international.html). This event will take place Sunday, July 3, at Humboldt High School in Humboldt, Iowa, the hometown of the legendary world champion wrestler Frank Gotch. We spoke with Curran Jacobs by phone Wednesday. "This is going to be outrageous," he said. "I just spoke with Mike Chapman [the wrestling historian and author who inspired this event], and he said that in Iowa it's just blowing up. There are flyers everywhere." When Curran Jacobs booked his hotel for this event by phone, the woman with whom he spoke "freaked out and treated me like I was LeBron James," saying that her whole family was going to go to it. "There are a lot of people excited about this event. It's going to be pretty huge. And there are some serious competitors that are showing up to compete in it, so it's going to be quite the day." He will be competing in the 180-200 lbs. weight class. On the other side of the four-man bracket will be Travis Newaza, who won the heavyweight division of the West Coast King of Catch Wrestling Tournament, has competed in numerous tournaments in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and grappling, and trains with Josh Barnett and Erik Paulson. If both Travis Newaza and Curran Jacobs advance to the finals, they will finally meet in a highly-anticipated match, and we discussed how they match up. One of the issues which has been discussed at length in catch wrestling circles is the need for unity among the various organizations. While he works with the Catch Wrestling Alliance, which is the main organizer of the Frank Gotch Catch Wrestling Tournament, he had a clear message to the entire catch wrestling community: "To every catch wrestling organization out there, I think it's important that we start supporting each other and that we unify under one banner and that we agree to team up. We're very small in the grappling world right now. If we want to grow and succeed, then we're going to have to team up." We also discussed his training with two-time NCAA Div. I wrestling champion Gabe Dean, the need to bring more college wrestlers into catch wrestling, how wrestling is like a "sledgehammer" while BJJ is like "water", and much, much more. No Holds Barred: Raul Ramirez on Who Is Wrestling at Frank Gotch Catch Tournament On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with Raul Ramirez of the Catch Wrestling Alliance ( www.catchwrestlingalliance.com). Our topic was what is shaping up to be an historic event in the 21st century revival of catch wrestling: The Frank Gotch World Catch Wrestling Tournament ( www.catchwrestlingalliance.com/frank-gotch-international.html). This event will take place Sunday, July 3, at Humboldt High School in Humboldt, Iowa, the hometown of the legendary world champion wrestler Frank Gotch. We spoke with Raul Ramirez by phone Monday. The tournament will include five weight classes for men with four contestants per weight class, and one open-weight division for women. "We're definitely gong to have two wrestling mats going at once," said Raul Ramirez, since the "goal is to have everything done in one day." He added, "Each division will be run as a tournament of its own." Every match has a 20-minute time limit. Victory in each match comes with a three-second pin or submission. While there are no points, if there is no pin or submission before the time expires, a winner will be chosen based on factors such as aggression and control. Among the contestants signed up to date are: Curran Jacobs, captain of the 2011 Michigan State University wrestling team, who has won two previous catch tournaments and was given the Frank Gotch Award as the outstanding competitor in the 2014 catch tournament in Los Angeles. He also scored a 29-second knockout in a recent MMA fight. Nick Caggia, called by some "Nick the Giant", who is a 300-plus pounder with numerous titles in many combat sports and martial arts. At the 2014 Catch Wrestling World Championship, which took place at the MMA World Expo at the Jacob Javits Center in New York, he won the overall championship belt after defeating four opponents without surrendering a fall. Travis Newaza, who won the heavyweight division of the West Coast King of Catch Wrestling Tournament held in San Diego and was named the outstanding competitor, winning all his matches by submissions. Besides competing in numerous tournaments in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and grappling, Newaza trains in catch wrestling with former UFC champion Josh Barnett. Adam DeHart of North Carolina, who has an overall (amateur and pro) record of 17-10 in MMA. He is a student of the late catch wrestling legend Billy Wicks, whose lineage goes back to Farmer Burns and Tom Connors. Travis Wiuff of Rochester, Minnesota, with an overall record of 73-20 in MMA. He was also an All-American wrestler at Minnesota State University-Mankato (2001) and RCTC - Rochester Community and Technical College (1998 and 1999). Bruce Wilson of Waterloo, Iowa, a former state wrestling champion from Dan Gable's high school. He is also a black belt in karate and a very respected tough guy who knows a lot of hooking moves. Ned and Christopher Morales, a father-and-son catch wrestling duo who train at Catch Wrestling Los Angeles under Raul Ramirez. Also competing in the women's open division: MMA fighter and pro wrestler Shayna Baszler, who trained under the late Billy Robinson and currently under Josh Barnett, and is part of MMA's "Four Horsewomen". Laura Anderson, who is a world and U.S. grappling champion. Two-time NCAA All-American gymnast and catch wrestler Wendy Minch, who also trained under the late catch wrestling legend Billy Wicks. Among the many other topics we also discussed was the July 2 catch wrestling seminar with Roy Wood, the coach and owner of the legendary Snake Pit wrestling club in Wigan, England, and Raul Ramirez. This will take place in Humboldt's Bicknell Park, where Frank Gotch trained for his epic 1911 match with George Hackenschmidt, and where a statue of Gotch now stands. No Holds Barred: Luis Ojeda on June 12 Legit Pro Wrestling 3 On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with catch wrestler and wrestling coach Luis Ojeda ( www.facebook.com/luis.ojeda.790). In 2014, he became the American heavyweight catch wrestling champion. In his next match, he will be wrestling in the main event of the third show hosted by Legit Pro Wrestling (LPW) ( www.facebook.com/LPWRESTLING). His opponent, in a match which will be for the International Heavyweight Championship, will be Chris Crossan, who holds the LPW British heavyweight title. LPW 3 will take place Sunday, June 12, at new Middlesbrough Sports Village in Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire, U.K. We spoke with Luis Ojeda by phone Thursday. "It's a really exciting time for me," he said. He had already planned a vacation with his family in the U.K. in June, but decided to include a stop on the mat to compete in Legit Pro Wrestling. He was originally slated to face Chris Crossan two years earlier in Los Angeles, but since that match did not happen then, he now has the opportunity finally to wrestle him. "I'm going to be in England anyways," he said. "I contacted Chris Crossan. He's the man over there. I give him a lot of props for being able to put it together, put a match together. He got a venue. I'm honored to be a part of Legit Pro Wrestling." While this will be a catch wrestling match, the rules, known as the "warrior rules", will be different from those used in other events. This match will have three five-minute rounds. Points will be awarded for pins or submissions, with the wrestler with the most points at the end of the match winning. Pins or submissions will not automatically end the match, but result in it being restarted. Thus, the match will go the full 15 minutes, "no matter what," he said. We also discussed his coaching wrestling at San Ysidro High School in San Diego, plans to teach a combatives class, and much more. No Holds Barred: Chris Crossan on June 12 Legit Pro Wrestling 3 On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with Chris Crossan of Legit Pro Wrestling (LPW) ( www.facebook.com/LPWRESTLING). Our subject in this, the second part of our discussion recorded by Skype this past Thursday, is the upcoming third event for LPW. LPW 3 will take place Sunday, June 12, at new Middlesbrough Sports Village in Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire, U.K. The main event will feature Chris Crossan himself, who holds the LPW British heavyweight title, against Luis Ojeda, who in 2014 became the American heavyweight catch wrestling champion. This match will be contested for the International Heavyweight Championship. More matches on this card will be announced shortly. "The show's June the 12th, a Sunday. It's going to run for three hours, 4 till 7. So this is all for families. We want it family-oriented. It's going to be a great day out, and I'm really excited that I've got a great opponent for this event," he said. "I'll be wrestling Luis Ojeda from the U.S. As you know, Luis has won a lot in catch wrestling. He's King of Catch USA Heavyweight Champion. We were scheduled to have a match. It will be almost two years to the day I flew out to America, and I didn't realize I wasn't wrestling him until I got there," he said. "The day after I was given a different match. But two years later we've managed to get our heads together, and we've arranged it, so we're going to finally get to have a match. I'm really looking forward to it." We discussed the rules for this match, which will have three five-minute rounds. Points will be awarded for pins or submissions, with the wrestler with the most points winning. These rules are designed to speed up the action on the mat and make it "more of a sprint," he said. If the points are even at the end of the match, it is a draw, as there will be no judges. Also, we discussed the need to teach catch wrestling to children. Towards this end, on May 2, an eight-week spring course for the Legit Pro Wrestling School has started. More information is at legitprowrestling.com/wrestlingschool. We also discussed how his own wrestling skills have improved over the past few years, the need for a democratically-run international federation for catch wrestling, how catch wrestling is "a working class sport", and much, much more. No Holds Barred Tenth Anniversary: Mike Chapman On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with wrestling historian and author Mike Chapman ( www.mike-chapman.com). This is the first in a series of discussions celebrating the tenth anniversary of this No Holds Barred podcast, which began in March 2006. These interviews will focus both on the legacy and issues raised over the years on this show, as well as contemporary issues and the future of the combat sports and martial arts. We spoke with Mike Chapman by phone Tuesday. The sport of wrestling, the world's oldest, has had many difficulties in recent decades, and Mike Chapman has been one of the leaders in trying to get the sport properly organized, marketed, and promoted. "Here's the thing about wrestlers as a group, and the coaches and the people who run it," he said. "They are tough, tough, tough people, but they are very programmed people. They've fallen into the trap of whatever worked before will work again if we just do more of it and do it harder. And of course you and I know that's not the case. Sometimes you just have to think outside the box. You have to be more flexible. You have to be innovative. "And bless 'em, the people that run wrestling -- I know almost all of them personally. They're really good people. I like them. I respect them. I'm going back 30 to 40 years, I've known almost all of them. "But they're just not very creative and flexible when it comes to looking at ways to improve the marketability of the sport." He continued, "I've said for 20 years the number one thing wrestling needs is some kind of an organization that operates as an advocate for the sport, to work with media, to build relationships, to branch out, to try to come up with a comprehensive short-term and long-term plan to increase the visibility, the acceptance, and the cultural magnitude of the sport. "And it just falls on deaf ears." While wrestling in the U.S. is nowhere near reaching its full potential, internationally the Olympic movement is rocking and reeling from one major scandal to another. We discussed how international wrestling as part of that Olympic movement has been accused time and again of corruption. Mike Chapman has probably written more about the world heavyweight wrestling champion Frank Gotch of the early 1900s than anyone else, and we discussed the style of wrestling from his era when wrestling was a major popular spectator sport: catch, or catch-as-catch-can wrestling. He is working to revive this style of wrestling, and we discussed the July 3 Frank Gotch World Catch Wrestling Tournament, which will take place in Humboldt, Iowa, Gotch's hometown. We also discussed the Big 10 wrestling championships, which he attended; the 2016 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, which take place March 17-19 in Madison Square Garden in New York; the need for people who want to help wrestling to get professional educational training in media, marketing, and management; the importance of No Holds Barred in being a voice for catch wrestling; and much, much more. Their next event will mark the first time that catch wrestling will take place in Singapore. On Sunday, March 20, there will be a catch wrestling event locally hosted by the Kapap Academy (Singapore), a member of Catch Wrestling Alliance. The location is the City Square Mall, Fountain Square, 180 Kitchener Road, Singapore. We spoke with Raul Ramirez by phone Monday. "One of the reasons we wanted to have it in Singapore is that," he said, "Singapore is a real hotbed for martial arts in Asia right now. So we wanted to be present kind of at the epicenter of martial arts." This event will be free to watch, and video will be recorded and later posted online. There will be individual matches involving wrestlers from many countries. The rules are that you can only win by pin or submission, with all submissions allowed except strangleholds. There are no points in these matches, which each have a 20-minute time limit. If there is no pin or submission in that time, the referee and outside judge will determine the winner. The Catch Wrestling Alliance also has created a youth wrestling program in the Emerson Sports Academy at Ralph Waldo Emerson Charter Middle School in West Los Angeles, California. We also discussed the importance of bringing catch wrestling to the youth, both for them and for the sport of wrestling. No Holds Barred: Dan Kanagie on April 2 Carolina Catch Wrestling Challenge On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with Dan Kanagie of the North American Catch Wrestling Association ( nacwa.weebly.com). Their first event of 2016 will be the Carolina Catch Wrestling Challenge. It will take place Saturday, April 2, at the Rogue Combat Club, 711 Biltmore Avenue, Asheville, North Carolina 28803. We spoke with Dan Kanagie by phone Tuesday. "It's our first event of this year," he said. "We're at a new location, a new area that we're adding on to, hoping to be expanding to even more states in the new year." We discussed the rules of this catch wrestling event, where there are no points, you can only win by pin or submission, and each match is two out of three falls. "These rules cross all boundaries," he said. "This is the most inclusive ruleset of all tournaments on the market." We also discussed how there will be tournaments in several weight classes, how the open weight tournament at this event is a state qualifier for the 2016 King of Catch Wrestling event later this year, what the future of catch wrestling should look like, the need for catch wrestling to be organized independently and separately from the corrupt Olympic movement, and much, much more. No Holds Barred: Qin Yunquan on Body Image, Women's Self-Defense, and Catch Wrestling On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with martial artist and catch wrestler Qin Yunquan ( www.facebook.com/yunquan.qin). She is an instructor for women's and children's self-defense at the Kapap Academy Singapore ( www.kapapsingapore.com). She has also just been invited to join the new Singapore-based body image movement, Rock The Naked Truth ( rockthenakedtruth.com). We spoke with her by Skype Thursday (Wednesday New York time). Before she was involved in martial arts and combat sports, at the age of 17 she suffered from anorexia, and weighed just 37 kg (about 81 pounds). Now an active freestyle and catch wrestler as well as a self-defense instructor, we discussed her transformation and involvement with Rock the Naked Truth. "I was invited to the Rock the Naked Truth movement," she said. "It was started off by Cheryl Tay, who is also a former anorexic victim herself, or a patient herself. The reason why she started the movement is that she wanted to spread the awareness that people should not be ashamed of their body type. People should not be ashamed of their appearances. Just be who you are, be comfortable who you are." She continued, "Don't be subjected to people's scrutiny. I think that's the objective of Rock the Naked Truth." We discussed how this movement helps both men and women to get in shape, to be happy about it, and to combat low self-esteem. Qin Yunquan's journey is also a story with many lessons for all. She went from being, in her words, a "chubby" teenager, to becoming anorexic, to straightening herself out and finding a calling in martial arts and teaching women's self-defense. She also has wrestled as part of the Singapore national wrestling team. We discussed how her academy values every martial arts system, including the Kapap unarmed combat system, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, catch wrestling, and many more. In addition, we discussed the upcoming March 20 catch wrestling tournament in Singapore, the grappling scene there, and much more.
