Yep, it's all in the angles. Remember 45 and 33 degrees in grappling, and they'll be your friends for life.
33 degrees is easy to remember if you think about a clock face, because between each number 1 to 12 is 33 degrees. And 45 is half way between any right-angle, or major compass point if you like.

This would only work if your opponent is side mounting you without using optimal leverage.

Yeah, if the opponent is a bit too high up, doesn't have his base down and is a bit too parallel with you.
If he's more perpendicular and is using his weight better then there are other options.
It's all about getting use to how he feels on top of you.
