What do people think, is this a good way of shutting down someone's half guard game?
Lesnar sort of did this with the Stockade in the second Frank Mir fight.
Brilz did this a bit against Lil' Nog too.

From my experience, a lot of the power in the turk to neutralize the half guard comes from catching their arm across the body almost like what I've seen called the "Howdy" choke. That is something that no competent half guarder would ever do. For one thing, it opens you to an easy-as-hell brabo / 3/4 nelson choke and some nasty neck cranks.
On bottom half-guard, you want: to hide your face, either behind a pawing arm or against their hip (to prevent the crossface) To get an underhook or at least not let him have one To either get on your side/elbow, get deep under him, get your outside knee in between you, or hip out a bit and get a butterfly hook (and the lockdown, I guess - not a fan)
Turking kills the bottom guy's ability to get onto their side and try to climb your back. If you figure-4 your legs you can block them from getting to deep half guard and make it hard to get a butterfly hook in, but it doesn't stop the scissor half / Z-guard, which can make it practically impossible for you to hit him effectively and keeps your weight comfortably off of his torso. That does give you some toehold or maybe heelhook options if he's lazy and sloppy with his foot placement, but it also gives him options like fighting to get the underhook now that there's some space, hunting a double wrist lock on your far arm, and even a couple sweeps or escapes.
So - kills half guard? If he doesn't have a competent scissor half, it does a lot to shut it down. If he does, it still basically forces him to take the scissor half route. So if you're good at dealing with the scissor half it is a great idea.
Just my experience with the matter.

What do people think, is this a good way of shutting down someone's half guard game? I've tried it a few times and didnt have much success with it. Though the vid shows one thing I was doing wrong so maybe I'll try it again. If the guy on bottom gets the underhook I usually whizzer and try and sit-out some. You have to be careful when you get the whizzer that they dont roll you to the whizzer arm side, thats why I sit-out or sprawl out. Take a look at the clip on this webpage, this is what I usually do www.championshipproductions.com/cgi-bin/champ/p/Wrestling/Whizzer-Series_WRD-00678.html

Yeah if they get an underhook then you wouldn't be in the right position to turk ride effectively anyway.

Mark Hatmaker has a turk DVD as a part of his ESP-RAW series, I haven't seen it though
