So many BJJ fanboys have been reacting to Couture's "Black Belt" like it's some cardinal sin.
First of all some think he got it because he choked James Toney.
When it was suggested several times to them it wasn't what made Neil Melanson decide to give Couture the "Black Belt" they argued what Couture had done to deserve a BJJ Black Belt.
When it was pointed out his 12 years in MMA training and 35 years wrestling probably makes him BB level through all the training he's had, they complained he didn't do it in a Gi so it doesn't count.
When they were told it wasn't in BJJ but Neil Melanson's Catch Wrestling based grappling system, they complained he even used a belt and it was ripping off BJJ and was a marketing stunt and it was just to make money. Even if that was the case - Who took Judo and emphasised the Ne Waza, chose the more mystic sounding Jiu Jitsu and slapped their family / nationality's name on it? And who set up a PPV event for the sole purpose of making money and getting people to take lessons in this newly re-branded form of Judo? And it's practitioners of this who get self righteous and say another grappling method or system is trying to make money off of them? Hahahaha.
It doesn't matter that it's been suggested the belt was a visual gag and that Melanson actually uses stripes, ones I think you sew or stick onto grappling board shorts. The fact he dared put a belt on Couture (around his neck and shoulders, not even around his waste) got them completely riled up. I think it's hilarious some people are losing sleep over this. I think Melanson just successfully trolled BJJ elitists.

When he drew with Jacare I figured he was high enough calibur for any belt.
It's ridiculous how retarded BJJ fans are.

I dont see what the big fucking deal is.
Frank Mir gets a belt after winning a fight and thats okay. Frank Mir's grappling is mediocre at best. Randy gets a Belt to symbolize his Stripes he got in Melansons system.
First off... Belt Rankings suck, arn't actual to the skill set most times, and especialy dont have a damn place in Catch-as-Catch-can !
Secondly...BJJ players..artitsts..fighters...dancers....whatever, have balls to say that its a rippoff when there origin as a style is a fucking rip off...nothing is new under the sun.

Neil's name is being dragged through the mud by the online BJJ community. They're calling him a joke a fraud etc... I feel bad that an excellent teacher like Neil would have to go through this when he's already said that his belt system was paying hommage to BJJ.

Even though he's saying it's a compliment because he likes that there are 5 levels or progress (although you should never stop learning once you get a black belt) it's falling on deaf ears. It's a shame.
If Neil was a Fraud he'd have been found out at Xtreme Couture a LONG time ago. You think any of the pro fighters there would take bullshit?

What I don't understand is that if the belt is NOT in BJJ, why is it the BJJ's community's business to try and "expose" Melanson?

Maybe because they believe BJJ is the only legitimate submission art when it's just the best marketed.
I'm not knocking BJJ as an art, just the people acting like religious fundamentalist extremists about it.

I read somewhere that Randy said on ESPN that it WAS a Brazilian Jiujitsu black belt. Can anyone confirm this?
The way I see it is that if Ricardo Liborio can award Monson a BJJ BB for his no-gi grappling then Randy can sure as shit get one as well. Is he "qualified" enough though? Who gives a shit, there are a bunch of BJJ black belts that suck balls on the ground.
Also why are people getting so pissed off at Randy getting a BB but no one really gave a shit when Barnett got his? Is it because BJJ guys are trying to "claim" Barnett? Eek I dont even know what I am saying anymore, so confused, going to sleep :S.

I think because BJJ is the norm, I can see Couture and even Melanson having to dumb down what they do for general sports journalists. Which I don't think is the right approach even if it is easier then trying to educate the general sports media.

In Barnett's case, everyone knew he wasn't claiming to be a BJJ BB or that he was now repping BJJ. Barnett simply needed the BB to compete in certain grappling tourneys.

That's what I thought, and I'm sure I heard either Barnett or Paulson say this in like a video or interview or something. Yet, BTTinUSA on sherdog claimed this wasn't the case. He says Barnett turned up to the Gi tournament and they just gave him a belt or something.

there's a bjj podcast show that interviewed Barnett before the 2009 NO-GI WORLDS and asked him how he earned a BJJ BB. Barnett's response was "from all the BB'S I passed out and made scream".
