I'm wondering if any of you use the standup at all? I grappled against a really good wrestler a couple of years ago and I noticed he often just got to his feet if he was getting into a position he didnt like. He didnt try to "get to guard" like they teach you in BJJ, he would just use a standup. Ever since then I have tried doing that and it seems to work for me pretty well. Anyone else use that strategy?

I think the best strategies can often include standing up. Even on your back, I think it's best to sweep, stand up and submit in that order. If you can't sweep, look to stand up (using an underhook or overhook on one side). If you can't stand up, look to submit. If you can't sweep, stand up or submit ... you're screwed! lol

I either look to sit out or stand up. I noticed for myself that its particulary hard to sweep sombody., and since my guard game isnt great, I usually look to grab and overhook or underhook and look to sit out or hip hiest if I cant score a sub.
So yeah, I think there great.

SamboSteve would always tell us to try and stand if we could. The thing that really got under his skin was when guys would be standing over a downed opponent and willingly go into their opponent's guard.

Magnifico, you trained with SamboSteve? I'm thinking of joining up with him, simply due to the fact that there are no Catch schools in NYC (for the love of God!), and I didn't like the BJJ I took here.
I hear he's done a couple of seminars here and there. Would you recommend his school? Does he teach any Catch? I hear there is no rolling in his school; is that a good thing or a bad thing??

SamboSteve is the man. I highly recommend his school. Not only do they roll, but most rolls we did started from standing. He doesn't teach CACC, but the sambo approuch is similar.

Thanks for getting back to me. Glad to hear you give him the thumbs up then. Still, though, I can't help but be insanely surprised and angry that there's not one Catch school in NYC. I just don't understand...

I love to stand from my back and I've noticed a lot of people just dont seem to be expecting it and will give up the space necessary to get out

I would have to say that the hardest part about standing up is that they like to grab your legs. Shaking them off your legs can be difficult at times but not impossible. The key is to make sure they dont get both of them.

What I was thinking was with someone in my guard(body scissors?) I sorta get on my side first then stiffarm to the neck/shoulder area to create space , pull one foot out and use the other to push off my opponents hip and stand. Nothing fancy..

You must be careful, least your guard gets passed. I find it easyer to try to stand while grabbing an overhook, or an underhoook and try to hip hiest out. Allways have some sort of controll while trying to escape.

Do you mean standing up when they're in your guard? Or when they're standing over you and you're on your back? More if I get turtled up I usually try and stand up if I can. I rarely go for submissions when they are in my guard. Usually go for sweeps. Anytime I feel like I'm getting in a bad position I usually try and get out of there often trying to scramble.
