Bob Anderson is the man credited with teaching the late Rolls Gracie Wrestling and Sambo. Rolls Gracie is known in the BJJ world as a revolutionary for embracing Sambo and Wrestling training and incorporating techniques from the styles into his Jiu Jitsu game. This was taboo in the BJJ world at the time., considered a "no no".

Yep. And it goes to show there isn't an art today that can claim to be 'pure'. Cross training has gone on for centuries, with even Catch taking from Greek, Indian and Persian wrestling as well as the more regional styles in the British Isles and Europe and then obviously developing further still with the migration to America.

The world is pretty small - and no wonder Rolls was said to be the best grappler of all amoungst the Gracie's.

Rolls Gracie was born out of wedlock. He was the son of Carlos Gracie, but was raised by Helio because Carlos' wife wouldn't take in a child he had from an extramartial affair. Rolls mother was an Italian stewardess from NYC, so Rolls spent alot of time between NYC and Rio De Janeiro. It was during one of his stays with his mother that he met Bob Anderson. The Gracie "bastard child" ended up being the best of them all, in part due to his cross training in Judo, Sambo and Wrestling.

I'm from NYC (Brooklyn) my whole life - and just moved to Virginia Beach 4 months ago. What years was Bob Anderson living and teaching wrestling in NYC - do you know?

I don't think Bob Anderson is from NY or taught in NY. I believe he first met Rolls on one of Rolls trip to the USA. Here's an interesting interview with Bob Anderson regarding Rolls. Interestingly enough, Bob Anderson claims that he taught Rolls the "Americana" (top wristlock)". Rolls Gracie is also the first Gracie to learn the triangle choke, when a student of his who cross trained in Judo started choking out everyone in class with the triangle. thefightworkspodcast.com/2007/08/12/80-rolls-gracie-recollections-from-bob-anderson/

A lot of BJJ practicioners don't know their history. Anderson talks about the closed minds in the BJJ community in the interview i posted. That mentality is changing for the better though.
